Professional Positions and Affiliations

Dr. Gerson is the Director of the Advanced Specialization in Couple and Family Therapy at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, as well as Adjunct Clinical Professor and Supervisor in that program. She Co-Directs the Project in Family Theory and Therapy at the Postdoctoral Program. Previously, Dr. Gerson was Director of Family Therapy Training and at the New York University Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology.

Dr. Gerson is Founding President of Section VIII, Couple and Family Therapy, of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association, and currently serves as the Chair of its Committee on Public Policy.

In the health care arena, Dr. Gerson is Co-Chair of the Committee on Psychoanalysis and Health Care for Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association. She is actively engaged in clinical research and consultation.

Her other academic affiliations include serving as faculty member of the Hong Kong University Family Institute, teaching faculty in the Department of Medicine at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. She has served on the Medical Advisory Board of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), New York Chapter, as well as the Minuchin Center for the Family.

Professional Activities

For the past twenty-five years, Dr. Gerson has been writing and presenting her work on the integration of psychoanalysis and couple and family therapy. In October 2007 she was an invited speaker at the annual conference of the New York State Psychological Association’s Division of Psychologists-Psychoanalysts (NYSPA), titled "Psychoanalysts in Current Contexts." In July 2007, she presented a workshop in Athens, as part of a conference organized by the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysis (IARPP). She has been an invited speaker at the Colorado Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies, the California Graduate Institute, and the Philadelphia Center for Psychoanalytic Education. In the past several years the Ackerman Institute and the Minuchin Center for Family has featured her as an invited workshop presenter.

Dr. Gerson has been invited to present her work in chronic illness at several international meetings, and was invited to speak at a "Meet the Professors" luncheon at the American Gastroenterological Association in 2005, including the biennial meetings of the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD). She is Co-Chair of the Cross-Cultural Committee of the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group.
